生物芯片是一个广泛的名词泛指微小化之生物分析装置，所以其型态将包罗万象，就其技术及产业的发展而言，可以分成二大类，即着眼于功能整合的处理型生物芯片（lab-on-a-chip），以及能获得大量信息的微数组型芯片（microarray）。此二大类生物芯片各有其特色，并可在细分成数种不同之类型及应用。除了以上二分法外亦有公司积极于整合型生物芯片发展，冀望将检体的制备、处理、分析乃至结果检出，可以在同一片芯片上完成微数组型生物芯片是在芯片基质上整齐的固定、排列大量生物探针，透过DNA-DNA杂交反应或是蛋白质间特异性结合，用以进行样品分析或检验。
