Silantes manufactures and markets stable isotopically labeled biomolecules for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. These isotopes are rich in the isotopes 2 H, 13 C, and 15 N. Our vision is to further broaden the application of stable isotope labeled biomolecules.
Silantes uses a new biotechnological approach to produce biomolecules, such as amino acids, nucleotides, peptides, proteins and DNA labeled with stable isotopes 2 H, 13 C and 15 N.
The former technique was developed in 1998 by Dr. Hermann Heumann of the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry.
The technology is based on the fact that chemoautotrophic bacteria can metabolize inorganic carbon in a pathway similar to that of green plants. Chemoautotrophic bacteria combine the advantages of green plants that can assimilate CO2 with the advantages of bacteria that are more productive and can also express heterologous proteins.
Labelled chemoautotrophic bacterial cells are used as factories for the production of stable isotopically labelled biomolecules. This pioneering technique provides excellent homogeneity of components labeled with stable isotopes, particularly in the field of triple-labeled (2 H, 13 C, and 15 N) biomolecules.
